UN General Assembly has unanimously adopted a document for reform of the Security Council. It adopted negotiating text by consensus for the long-pending Security Council reforms, setting the stage for talks on the issue at its 70th session beginning today.

It will boost India’s bid for a permanent seat in the revamped world body.

India has welcomed the decision to carry forward the text presented by the UNGA President on the UNSC reform.

External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup described the development as significant and said now text-based negotiations can be commenced after more than two decades of discussions.

New Delhi said it looks forward to early commencement of text-based negotiations with a view to securing concrete outcomes during the upcoming 70th Session of the UNGA.

New Delhi also called upon all Member States to constructively engage in this process so that the long pending reform of the Security Council can be achieved to equip the Council to address the global challenges more effectively.
