IAS officer Girish Chandra Murmu has been appointed the first Lieutenant-Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, a statement from President Ram Nath Kovind’s office said on Friday.

Girish Chandra Murmu is a 1985 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of Gujarat cadre and was the principal secretary to Narendra Modi during his tenure as CM of Gujarat. He was currently Secretary, Department of Expenditure in the Ministry of Finance. Murmu is considered a close confidant of Narendra Modi.

Radha Krishna Mathur has been named as the Lieutenant-Governor of Ladakh. The two Union Territories were created after the bifurcation of the state of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5.

Satya Pal Malik, the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, has been appointed as the Governor of Goa.

In another appointment, PS Sreedharan Pillai has been named as the Governor of Mizoram.

“The above appointments will take effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices,” the statement added.

  1. Shri Satya Pal Malik, Governor of Jammu & Kashmir is transferred and appointed as Governor of Goa;
  2. Shri P.S. Sreedharan Pillai as Governor of Mizoram;
  3. Shri Girish Chandra Murmu as Lieutenant Governor of Jammu-Kashmir;
  4. Shri Radha Krishna Mathur as Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh

The above appointments will take effect from the dates they assume charge of their respective offices.
