The agitating Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) students today called off their 18-day-old relay “hunger strike”. This follow government inviting them for a dialogue to resolve their demands at a meeting slated for Tuesday in Mumbai.
Ranjit Nair, a representative of the FTII Students’ Association, however, clarified that although the relay hunger strike undertaken by the students in batches was being withdrawn, the general strike, that started on June 12 will continue till the issues raised by them are resolved during the proposed talks. The students are protesting against appointment of actor Gajendra Chauhan as FTII Chairman.
Students have withdrawn their hunger strike today after receiving a letter from the joint secretary Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
Student’s representative said that in this letter, joint secretary has agreed to meet them for talks on their Demands at the office of Films Division in Mumbai, on Tuesday. In the last week Ministry had appealed the striking students to call off the strike and come forward for discussions.
In their reply striking students had sent a letter to the ministry on Friday expressing their willingness to call off the hunger strike in case the ministry agrees to talks.
