Indian equity markets witnessed a broad-based sell-off on Tuesday as investors turned cautious amid weakening domestic macroeconomic indicators, foreign fund outflows and renewed concerns over global growth and monetary tightening. Benchmark indices declined sharply, reflecting a wider risk-off sentiment across international markets.

The correction came after recent market gains and was intensified by weakness across Asian bourses, uncertainty over global interest rates, pressure on technology stocks and signs of moderation in India’s industrial and business activity.

The benchmark Sensex ended lower by 893.39 points (1.16%) at 76,200.68, while the Nifty 50 dropped 278.80 points (1.16%) to close at 23,824.10, slipping below the psychologically important 23,850 level.

Global Headwinds Trigger Domestic Correction

Market participants pointed to a combination of external and domestic triggers behind the sharp decline.

Across Asia, sentiment weakened significantly after heavy selling in regional markets, particularly South Korea, where a steep fall in equities unsettled investors. Global technology stocks also remained under pressure as investors reassessed valuations following the prolonged AI-led market rally.

IT, Metals Lead the Decline

European markets also traded lower, while weak indications from US futures signalled continued caution across global markets.

At the same time, expectations of tighter monetary conditions in the United States strengthened. Investors are increasingly pricing in the possibility that the US Federal Reserve may maintain a restrictive stance for longer if inflation remains elevated.

Selling pressure was concentrated in sectors sensitive to global demand and capital flows.

Information technology and metal stocks emerged among the biggest losers amid concerns over slower international growth, weaker commodity prices and softer corporate earnings expectations.

Among major Nifty constituents:

  • Infosys declined 3.42%
  • HDFC Bank lost 1.75%
  • Reliance Industries fell 1.55%

Defensive sectors offered limited support. Pharma and healthcare stocks managed to outperform the broader market and attracted selective buying.

The broader market also reflected investor caution:

  • BSE Mid-Cap Index fell 0.88%
  • BSE Small-Cap Index declined 0.62%

Market breadth remained decisively negative, with declining stocks substantially outnumbering advancing counters.

Volatility Rises as Investors Seek Safety

Investor nervousness became visible in volatility indicators.

India VIX, often regarded as the market’s fear gauge, surged 8.56% to 13.94, indicating growing expectations of short-term market swings.

Currency movements added to caution as the rupee weakened marginally against the US dollar, while a firmer dollar globally weighed on emerging market sentiment.

Bond markets, however, offered some comfort. India’s benchmark 10-year government bond yield eased, suggesting expectations that slowing growth could eventually support a more accommodative rate outlook.

Economic Indicators Flash Signs of Moderation

Fresh macroeconomic data released during the day reinforced concerns that India’s growth momentum may be slowing.

Growth in India’s eight core infrastructure industries decelerated sharply to 0.5% in May 2026, marking one of the weakest readings in nearly two years.

The slowdown appeared broad-based.

Output contracted in five of the eight core sectors, including crude oil, natural gas and fertilisers, reflecting continued stress in industrial production.

Only electricity, cement and steel recorded growth:

  • Electricity output rose strongly by 8.7%
  • Cement expanded 8.4%
  • Steel production grew 5%, though at a slower pace than earlier months

Economists said the data suggests industrial activity is increasingly dependent on a limited number of sectors rather than broad-based expansion.

PMI Data Suggests Slower Business Momentum

Separate business activity indicators also pointed toward moderation.

Flash PMI estimates showed both manufacturing and services sectors easing in June.

  • Manufacturing PMI softened to 54.5
  • Services PMI declined to 57.3
  • Composite PMI slipped to 57.4

Although readings remained above the expansion threshold of 50, the data indicated that growth momentum has cooled from previous months.

Commodities, Currency and Global Signals

Commodity markets added another layer of complexity.

Gold prices corrected while Brent crude extended losses as concerns over immediate supply disruptions eased and attention shifted back toward demand outlook and geopolitical negotiations.

Meanwhile, the US Dollar Index remained firm, reinforcing pressure on emerging-market assets.

Stocks in Focus

Despite broader weakness, several individual counters saw stock-specific action:

  • Emcure Pharmaceuticals gained after renewed brokerage optimism.
  • Vedanta witnessed sharp selling amid reports of promoter stake dilution through block deals.
  • Info Edge advanced after highlighting strong returns from its startup and AI investments.
  • NPST rallied on securing a UPI application development order.
  • Syrma SGS Technology moved higher following a manufacturing joint venture announcement.
  • Birla Corporation gained after commencing commercial coal production.
  • Lemon Tree Hotels announced expansion in Nepal through a new hospitality project.

IPO Market Shows Mixed Investor Appetite

Primary markets delivered a mixed picture.

While Advit Jewels attracted strong investor interest with robust subscription levels, Turtlemint Fintech Solutions saw moderate demand. Waterways Leisure Tourism, however, remained under-subscribed during the early phase of bidding.

Outlook

Analysts believe markets may remain volatile in the near term as investors monitor global inflation data, central bank signals, corporate earnings and domestic growth indicators. While India’s structural growth narrative remains intact, near-term sentiment could continue to be influenced by global capital flows and evidence of whether economic activity stabilises in the coming months.
