NEW DELHI: The Centre on Saturday expressed satifaction over the law and order situation in the aftermath of the Allahabad High Court Judgment. Talking to media persons Home Minister Chidamabaram said situation had been extremely peaceful and no untoward incident has been reported from anywhere in the country.
“The government is pleased and satisfied at the response of the people to the judgement, which in the Prime Minister’s words has been respectful and dignified’, Chidambaram said.
He said, apart from 52 companies of central para military forces, and rapid action force personnel already deployed in Uttar Pradesh and forces in other states, a separate pool of paramilitary companies has been kept for any emergency.
He said that the Indian Air Force is also on stand by to rush the para military or army personnel to troubled spots, if required.
To a question by TIA about the role of centre after the judgment if no party goes to Supreme Court, the home minister said that the Prime Minister has pointed out that the correct conclusion of the judgment at this stage is that Status Quo will be maintained until the Supreme Court takes up the cases. “There is fair assumption that appeals will be made to the Apex Court and it may pass some interim order”, said chidambaram-adding jokenigly that the media should now concentrate more on commonwealth games.
Replying to an oth question Chidamabaram said that the only role of the central government is to maintain the Status Quo at the site besides maintaining law and order and peace.
Union Home Minister also made it clear that the latest judgemnet has nothing to do with the act that took place on 6th of December 10092. “It was an act that was unacceptable. This judgement in no way justifies the demolition of the Babri masjid. That was a criminal act. One cannot attribute the judges with justifying the act,” he said.
Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati had accused the Centre of not extending any help to the state in maintaining law and order in the aftermath of the verdict. Mayawati said Friday morning that Muslims have no reason to worry after the verdict, but law and order around the site is the Centre’s responsibility.
"If there’s any mischief around the disputed site which disturbs the law and order situation in the state, Centre would be responsible for it. Therefore, I request the Centre to take the matter seriously," said Mayawati.
In reply, Chidambaram said: "I thought that the government of UP is maintaining law and order with help from forces of central government. If UP expects that central government should maintain law and order with help from UP forces then so be it."
