India is all set to host the two day BRICS Summit in Goa Saturday. Top leaders of eleven countries, including the heads of BRICS nations will take part in the summit to discuss bilateral ties and wide range of issues of mutual concern.
Besides Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has especially invited the leaders from BIMSTEC as part of India’s Act East policy.
BIMSTEC, which stands for Bay of Bengal Initiative For Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, comprises of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the BIMSTEC Meeting on Sunday evening, followed by a meeting of BRICS and BIMSTEC leaders.
BRICS Summit comes at a time when relationship between India and Pakistan has gone sour following the terror attack at Uri and surgical strikes by Indian Army across LoC.
Terrorism will be on the agenda and India is likely to pitch for united fight against the international threat. Besides, strengthening economic cooperation, increasing people to people contact and bolstering intra BRICS trade will also figure during the Summit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines.
A number of agreements on trade and economic cooperation between BRICS countries will be signed. The BRICS leaders will adopt the Goa Declaration at the end of the summit.
