A long-awaited book paying tribute to the life and work of renowned Urdu journalist Mohammad Muslim (1920–1986) has just been published under the title محمد مسلم۔۔ عظیم انسان، بیباک صحافی‘ “Mohammad Muslim – A Great Human, A Fearless Journalist.”

The volume, compiled by senior journalist Javed Akhtar, is the first comprehensive effort in nearly four decades to bring together Muslim Sahib’s writings along with reflections from over forty eminent personalities.

The 320-page book, priced at ₹350, has been published by MMI Publications, New Delhi, and will soon be available on Flipkart and Amazon. It features a selection of his editorials and essays alongside contributions from leading intellectuals, journalists, and community leaders who knew him closely.

Mohammad Muslim is remembered as one of post-Independence India’s most principled Urdu journalists — a writer who upheld truth and dignity above all else. Admirers often describe him as a living embodiment of Allama Iqbal’s ideal “Mard-e-Momin.”

Former Prime Minister I.K. Gujral once remarked:
“From my very first meeting with Muslim Sahib, I was struck by his intelligence, wit, and reasoned eloquence. His honesty and fearless simplicity left a lasting impression on me.”

Veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar wrote:
“In today’s era, when dishonesty dominates journalism and very few fight for principles, I deeply miss Muslim Sahib. He was not merely principled — he himself was a principle.”

Former AMU Vice-Chancellor Syed Hamid praised his prose as “measured, thoughtful, compassionate, and free from triviality.”

Former diplomat and statesman Syed Shahabuddin noted:
“When the history of Indian Muslims is written, Muslim Sahib’s contributions will be recorded in golden words. He was a wise leader who served the community without seeking fame or reward.”

In his foreword, Syed Sadatullah Husaini, Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, emphasized the book’s contemporary relevance:
“This collection offers a practical role model for journalists, community leaders, and movement workers alike. Many aspects of his life remain especially significant today.”

Reflecting on the book, Kuldip Nayar described it as “an invaluable resource for the younger generation,” adding:
“If journalists of today and tomorrow take even a single page from his book of life, they will not only become good Muslims but also excellent citizens and professionals.”

Speaking about his effort, compiler Javed Akhtar said the book aims to inspire future generations with the values of fearless journalism and uncompromising integrity that Mohammad Muslim embodied.
