All educational institutions in Varanasi including Kashi Vidya Peeth and Sampurnanand Sanskrit University have also been closed from today till October 2 in view of tension caused of Benaras Hindu University BHU students agitation. BHU has already been closed till October 2 from today following students agitation.

Large number of security forces have been deployed in and around BHU campus and inmates of the hostels have started leaving the campus. University authorities have denied that hostels are being vacated.

Students specifically girls, are on agitation at BHU for last four days over an incident of misbehaviour with a girl student in the campus on Thursday night. They had started Dharna at the main gate of the university seeking action against culprits.

Last night situation turned violent when a group of students went to meet Vice Chancellor at his residence and they were disbursed following lathi charge by university security guards. Police also reached at university campus to control the situation and disbursed the students sitting on Dharna using force.

Few journalists have also received injuries in lathi charge resorted by the police. Stones were also allegedly pelted by the students against security forces. University authorities have announced the closure of the university four days earlier of scheduled holiday for Deshahara.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has sought reports from Varanasi Commissioner about police lathi charge on students and injury to journalists.
Rahul Gandhi takes dig at BJP’s Beti Bachao Beti Padhao drive

New Delhi: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi today slammed the BJP for the lathi charge by police on girl students of the BHU, saying it was the saffron party’s version of “Beti Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao”.

The university campus last night witnessed violence by students who were lathicharged by the police, in an ugly turn of a protest against an alleged eve-teasing incident.

“BJP version of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao in BHU,” Gandhi tweeted, attaching a video link of the students who alleged that they were beaten up by male policemen at the campus.
