UNITED STATES has welcomed a pause in fighting between Turkish and Kurdish forces in northern Syria, urging them to focus on fighting so-called Islamic State. A US military spokesman described the lull as a loose agreement which he hoped would solidify. Kurdish sources say a ceasefire is in place but a Turkish-backed Syrian rebel commander rejected the term.
Earlier, Kurdish fighters have announced agreeing to a US-brokered ceasefire with Turkey in northern Syria for an unspecified period of time. The Jarablus Military Council spokesman told a news agaency that the truce came into effect at Monday midnight.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that there was calm on the southern front of Jarablus, which Turkish forces captured from IS terrorists last week. The Jarablus Military Council is backed by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance of Arab and Kurdish forces.
