In northern Syria, air strikes on the city of Raqqa, have killed at least 32 members of the Islamic State (IS) militant group and wounded 40 more. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the strikes today hit IS bases in the north, east and south-east of the city. It said the US-led coalition was believed to have carried out the raids. Raqqa is IS’s de facto Syrian headquarters.

Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the UK-based observatory which has a network of informants on the ground, said there had been about 15 strikes. He said the casualty figures had come from just one hospital and the final death toll could be higher.
