Indian equity markets continued their upward momentum on Wednesday, with benchmark indices posting gains for the fourth consecutive session. Broad-based buying across sectors lifted sentiment, though concerns over delayed monsoon progress capped the upside.
The S&P BSE Sensex advanced 347 points, or 0.45%, to close at 77,155.62, while the Nifty 50 rose 96 points, or 0.40%, to settle at 24,085.70. Over the past four sessions, the Sensex has surged 4.5% and the Nifty nearly 4%.
Public sector banks, metals, and consumer durables led the rally, while auto and realty stocks lagged. Trent was the standout performer, rising 7.25%, while Bharti Airtel and Infosys added over 1% each.
The broader market outperformed frontline indices, with the BSE MidCap Index gaining 0.73% and the SmallCap Index rising 0.58%. Market breadth remained strong, with 2,404 stocks advancing against 1,876 declines.
Monsoon Delay Raises Inflation Fears
Despite the rally, investors remained cautious as India’s southwest monsoon stalled after reaching Kerala, leaving the country with a rainfall deficit of 35% as of June 16. The shortfall is most pronounced in central India (63%) and eastern/northeastern regions (43%). Mumbai, which typically receives monsoon rains by early June, is still awaiting its first showers.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects the slowdown to persist for another five to six days due to unfavorable weather conditions. The Centre has placed 150–200 districts under close monitoring, urging states to prepare crop contingency plans. Officials warned that a weak monsoon could stoke food inflation and pressure agricultural output, though seed, fertiliser, and reservoir stocks remain adequate for now.
Global Diplomacy: G7 Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, attending the G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, emphasized the need for stronger international partnerships to tackle interconnected challenges in energy, food, health, cyber, and economic security. Addressing the Outreach Session on “Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity,” Modi cautioned against the use of trade and technology for narrow interests, which he said was eroding trust in global affairs.
Investors are also watching for a potential meeting between Modi and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines, which could have implications for trade and investment flows.

Outlook
The Indian equity market’s resilience reflects strong domestic liquidity and optimism around corporate earnings. However, the delayed monsoon remains a key risk factor, with potential implications for food inflation, rural demand, and overall economic growth.
Global cues, particularly from the US Federal Reserve and geopolitical developments at the G7 Summit, will also shape investor sentiment in the near term.
For now, the rally underscores investor confidence, but sustainability will hinge on monsoon revival and clarity on global monetary policy.
