The NDA Government at Centre has worked out a formula to allot seats for the 33% reservation for women in legislative bodies, proposing a lottery-based system to determine which constituencies will be reserved.

According to the proposed mechanism, constituencies would be earmarked for women through a draw of lots. If an even number is drawn, all even-numbered constituencies would be reserved for women candidates. Conversely, if an odd number is selected, all odd-numbered constituencies would fall under the reserved category.

Sources indicate that the model is being examined as a way to ensure transparency and uniformity in the allocation process.

The move is part of the broader framework to operationalise the Women’s Reservation policy, which seeks to increase female representation in Parliament and state assemblies.

Government officials say the final contours will be decided after wider consultations and may be incorporated into the rules once the policy is formally rolled out.
