Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has said that there will be no place for racist politics in the country hereafter, and the rise of religious extremism will not be allowed. He made these remarks as part of the policy statement presented at the inaugural session of the 10th Parliament, established under the 1978 presidential constitution.
The President further announced that the government plans to finalize the 3rd Staff Level Agreement on the Extended Fund Facility with the IMF by tomorrow. The new Parliament officially convened today, marking the beginning of a new legislative term. More from our correspondent;
The policy statement made by the President signals the government’s plans towards achieving national unity, governance, and international financial support, setting the tone for Sri Lanka’s political and economic trajectory. President Dissanayake’s pledge to eliminate racist politics and religious extremism opens a new chapter in the island nation which has seen decades of ethnic conflict. While presenting the policy statement, the President talked about restoring public trust in the rule of law and finding answers to unresolved crimes. It was also revealed that the IMF agreement will continue and an agreement will be finalised by tomorrow towards completion of the third review of the ongoing programme. The inaugural session also had the election of Ashoka Sapumal Ranwala as the Speaker and recognising Sajith Premadasa as Opposition Leader.
