A special CBI court here awarded the life sentence to Zafar Masood, Mohmmad Asif and Rais Quareshi for the murder on Thursday. The court had pronounced all three accused as guilty after the hearing the case on Wednesday and had reserved the quantum of sentence.
The murder was investigated by the CBI after the case was transferred to the agency by the state government.
The court also imposed a penalty of Rs.21,000 each on Zafar Masood and Mohd Asif and a penalty of Rs.11,000 on Rais Quereshi.
On December 17 2007 the CBI had cracked the case after arrest of Mohd. Asif and Zafar Masood for their involvement in the murder of Mazhar.
The agency claimed that the duo — Mohammed Asif and Zafar Masood (both residents of Aligarh) — had killed AMU student Kausar Salik Mazhar with an intention to rob his motorcycle on April 20. “The arrested persons have admitted to their involvement in the murder of Kausar,” a CBI spokesperson said at that time.
