NEW DELHI/ LUCKNOW (AMN/ TIA Monitoring Desk): The fury of several major rivers continues to create havoc in north India as UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi made an aerial survey of the flood affected areas. People in different part of Uttar Pradesh, Utrakhand, Haryana and Bihar are still marooned in the flood and crying for help.


33 districts of western Uttar Pradesh have been baldly affected by the raging rivers. According to AIR , the rivers Yamuna, Ganga, and Ramganga are still rising in Bijnore, Moradabad, Farrukhabad, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, and Bareilly districts.  reports that rescue and relief work is in full swing.


Chief Minister Mayawati today made aerial survey of flood affected Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnore, Moradabad and Bareilly districts. In Bijonre, she said that centre must provide about 225 crore rupees for flood affected districts. She directed officials for providing adequate relief to the people affected with flood in different district.


Flood continued to play havoc in Moradabad where the flood water has crept into several posh colonies and affected a large population. In Bijnore, flood packets were dropped from Army helicopters to the affected population. In Mathura the overflowing Yamuna River has inundated several temples at Goverdhan. Yamuna is flowing above the danger mark in the district. Meanwhile at least nine people died in rain- related incidents in the state during last 24 hours. According to the Central Water Commission, most of the major rivers including Ganga Yamuna, Sharda, and Ghaghara are flowing above danger mark at several places in the state.


In Uttarakhand, six more people were killed in a rain related incident whereas rescue and relief operation is in full swing with the help of Defence Personnel, ITBP and NDRF which were lashed due to incessant rain since last several days.

There is also report of killing of two Army officers, including a Colonel, were killed in an avalanche in Chamoli district.  Rescue and relief operation is in full swing with the help of the Army, ITBP and NDRF.

Due to heavy rain in adjoining hills, the water level at Hathini Kund Barage is increasing continuously in Haryana.  1,60,000 cusec water was discharged on Tuesday from the barrage in Yamuna.

River Yamuna is flowing over the danger mark. With fresh release of water from the Hatnikund barrage and heavy rains in the upper catchments areas, the water level in the river has swelled up above the danger mark.

Meanwhile UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Defence Minister A.K. Antony have made an aerial survey of different flood affected areas in Uttarakhand Tuesday.  Mrs. Gandhi later asked the Centre  to have an immediate assessment of the damage caused by floods and cloud bursts in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. A Congress party press release said that she spoke to the Prime Minister on phone and urged for a liberal package to the affected States be released through the National Calamity Relief Fund.
