The 16th Republic Day of Nepal is being marked nationwide today. Republic Day of Nepal has been observed for the past one-and-a-half decade as an epochal achievement of the arduous struggle and devotion of the Nepali people.
On 23 November 2006, the Comprehensive Peace Accord was reached between the seven political parties and CPN (Maoist), ending the decade-long insurgency in the country.
Accordingly, the Constituent Assembly election was held on 10 April 2008 and a republic was declared on 28 May 2008 through the first Constituent Assembly meeting ending the 240 years Shah Dynasty monarchy. On this day, a republican governance system was adopted.
Akashvani correspondent reports, Republic Day in Nepal is celebrated across the nation on May 29 every year in commemoration of the day the republican system was proclaimed on the backing of the historical people’s movement of 2006 AD.
Amidst the presence of President Ramchandra Paudel, Republic Day in Nepal is being celebrated at the Nepal Army pavilion, Tundikhel in Kathmandu this morning under the aegis of the Republic Main Function Committee. The government is celebrating the day in a grand manner with the maximum participation of citizens.
On this occasion, the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Speaker, National Assembly Chairperson and chiefs of different political parties have already extended their best wishes and congratulations to all Nepali citizens at home and abroad.
They have offered a heartfelt tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for the establishment of a republic in Nepal.
