Jammu and Kashmir’s first Lt Governor, Girish Chandra Murmu has resigned, public broadcaster All India Radio said on Wednesday evening. Murmu was appointed Lt Governor on 31 October, Jammu and Kashmir’s first when the union territory carved out of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was notified.
There has been no official word on Murmu’s exit from Kashmir’s Raj Bhawan. But there is speculation that he could be in line to be the next Comptroller and Auditor General when Rajiv Mehrishi completes his term this week on 7 August.
The 1985-batch Indian Administrative Service officer of the Gujarat cadre was the principal secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi when the latter was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
Rajiv Mehrishi, who held the post of the Home Secretary of India back in 2015, took over as the CAG on 25 September 2017 and is expected to retire by end of this week.
