German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday that her country will suspend military exports to Saudi Arabia.
Her remarks came one day after Saudi Arabia acknowledged that journalist Jamal Khashoggi died in a fight at its consulate in Istanbul.
Merkel said Germany condemns Khashoggi’s death in the strongest terms, and stressed the need to clarify what happened.
Last month, the German government approved about 480 million dollars’ worth of military exports to Saudi Arabia.
German media say previous military exports were mostly made up of patrol vessels. Germany is said to be the world’s 4th largest exporter of arms to Saudi Arabia, following the United States, Britain and France.
