North Korean leader Kim Jong Un says his country will work toward denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula. And US President Donald Trump has promised to provide security guarantees in return. They signed a joint statement after meeting for the very first time in Singapore.
US President Donald Trump said, “We are very proud of what took place today. I think our whole relationship with North Korea and the Korean Peninsula is going to be a much different situation than it has been in the past.”
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said, “At today’s historic meeting, we are signing a document that marks a whole new beginning and leaves the past behind. The world will see a major change.
I want to express my gratitude to President Trump for working to make this meeting happen.”
The statement says the two countries will work together to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.
The document also said, both nations commit to establishing new relations in accordance with the desire of the people of the two countries for peace and prosperity.
Earlier, addressing a press conference after the talks, Mr Trump said, he and Kim have developed a very special bond. He said, the talks went better than anybody could have expected.
Asked whether the two leaders have reached an agreement on denuclearisation, Mr Trump said, they will be starting the process very quickly. He said, the relationship with the Korean peninsula will now be different.
Kim said, they have decided to leave the past behind, and the world will see a major change.
Before the delegation-level talks, both leaders met for a one-on-one meeting for about 45 minutes.
Earlier, Mr Trump expressed hope that the summit would be tremendously successful. Kim said, there were a number of obstacles to the meeting and they overcame all of them.
Trump and Kim are the first leaders of their respective countries to meet, marking the culmination of months of diplomatic wrangling and negotiations.
Later, Mr Trump again addressed a press conference, in which he said, his talks with Kim were honest, direct and productive. The US President asserted that there will be a complete denuclearisation, and it will be verified.
On a question about troops in South Korea, Mr Trump said, he is not reducing military capabilities, but will stop its military exercises with South Korea which routinely infuriate Pyonyang. He expressed hope that the Korean conflict will end soon.
The US President asserted that North Korea has already started destroying a missile engine testing site, and US is prepared to starting a new history with North Korea. Mr Trump also thanked Singapore for hosting the summit.
