PM Modi expresses condolences over tragedy

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 that rocked central Italy on Wednesday left at least 78 people dead, the country’s civil protection unit said in the first official death toll.

The head of country’s civil protection unit said there are many people under masonry and many others are
missing.

Officials said the roads in and out of town are cut off and half the town has been damaged. Reports say the quake caused extensive damage to the central town of Amatrice. Tremors were also felt in the capital, Rome.

According to affaritaliani  news in the night between Tuesday and Wednesday a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.0 devastated the area between Lazio, Marche, Umbria and Abruzzo, causing deaths and injuries. The first quake, violent, at 3:36 in the morning threw off the bed thousands of people, felt very strong from Rimini to Naples. The epicenter was near Accumoli, in the province of Rieti, Lazio, just 4 kilometers deep, a village equidistant from amateur and Norcia. And just in Accumoli, where there would be six deaths, and in nearby amateur recording the most damage. ”
The gravity of the situation is also confirmed by the head of the local Red Cross, who spoke of a crumbling bridge, to Three eyes, which forces to enter the country only on foot slowing relief efforts and a major gas leak. India’s  External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said in a tweet, there is no report of any Indian casualty in the massive earthquake which rocked Italy today claiming several lives.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his sadness to the families of deceased in Italy quake. In a tweet Mr Modi said he is saddened by the loss of lives due to earthquake in Italy. He Condoled bereaved families and prayed for injured.

Meanwhile, another powerful earthquake of 6.8 magnitude struck central Myanmar this afternoon. At least one person have been killed while pagodas were damaged in the ancient city of Bagan. It also shook several parts of east and northeast India. The quake was also felt across neighbouring Thailand and Bangladesh.

According to National Centre for Seismology, a unit of Ministry of Earth Sciences, the epicenter of the quake was in Myanmar and it occurred at 4:04 PM at a depth of 58 kms.

Tremors were felt in Bihar, West Bengal,Uttar Pradesh and northeastern states in India, spreading panic among people.The northeast is one of the most earthquake prone regions in the world.
