A strong earthquake has struck Kyushu, southwestern Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says the magnitude 6.9 quake occurred in Miyazaki Prefecture, and had an intensity of lower 5 on the Japanese scale of 0 to 7 in the hardest-hit areas.

The agency has issued a tsunami advisory for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency says an expert panel will investigate possible links between the strong tremor that hit southern Japan and a megaquake that is expected to strike the Nankai Trough in the seas off central through southwestern Japan.

The magnitude 6.9 quake struck off Miyazaki Prefecture at about 9:19 p.m. on Monday.
