A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 has hit central Italy, leaving at least six people dead and several others trapped under rubble. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake struck 10 kilometers southeast of Norcia, a town in Perugia Province this morning.

Initial reports say the quake caused extensive damage to the central town of Amatrice. Tremors were also felt in the capital, Rome. Italy’s Civil Protection agency said the roads in and out of town are cut off and half the town has been damaged.
