At least 16 people were killed in a landslide triggered by incessant rain at Famla village in Tawang District in Arunachal Pradesh last night. The village is around 4 km away from Tawang town. The deceased persons are reported to be non Arunachali labourers working at a hotel construction site in Tawang. It is feared more people are trapped in the landslide.

Search and rescue operation is going on with the help of Army and local people but is facing difficulty due to heavy rain. More rain triggered landslides are also being reported from different part of Tawang Dsitrict damaging electric poles and disrupting power supply. Chief Minister Kalikho Pul has asked Tawang Deputy Commissioner to submit detail report of the landslide immediately.

The heavy and incessant rain has also caused havoc in the other parts of the state. The Noa Dehing and Jengthu River are flowing above normal level and have inundated human habitations and agricultural fields in Namsai and the adjacent Changlang District. It is reported that many houses were abandoned and the people stranded are being shifted to safe places by district authorities with the help of Army.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief on the loss of lives caused by a landslide in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. In a tweet, Mr Modi extended condolences to bereaved families.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi today expressed grief on the loss of lives caused by a landslide in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. Extending condolences to the families of the dead in the accident, Ms Gandhi hoped that relief and rescue operations will avert further loss. She has asked Congress MLAs, the PCC and the Frontals to volunteer with relief to people.
