Senior BJP leader and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Wednesday “admitted” defeat in the Gorakhpur and Phulpur byelections and said “necessary corrective measures will be taken soon”.
“We admit defeat. There was transfer of votes from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to the Samajwadi Party candidates. This was not expected at least by the scale it seemed to have happened,” Mr Maurya told a TV channel.
He said the BJP leadership definitely had taken the polls seriously but apparently some works and “genuine BJP voters” must have stayed away from the polling stations.
“They must be over confident about BJP’s victory….Whatever the reasons, all factors will be looked into closely and analysed,” he said.
Mr Maurya had vacated Phulpur Lok Sabha seat after he joined the Yogi Adityanath ministry as the Deputy Chief Minister while state Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had vacated the Gorakhpur parliamentary constituency.
