Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has pledged to hold an election “as transparent as a mirror,” stressing that a free and fair poll is not “a mere slogan.”
Speaking at a dialogue with journalists at the Election Commission Bhaban on Monday, Nasir Uddin said the media will be a “key partner” in ensuring credibility. “This dialogue is not a formality. We want to move forward with your valuable opinions,” he said.
The CEC revealed that the Commission has updated the voter list, identifying 2.1 million deceased voters and enrolling 4.3 million new ones. “The gender gap in voter registration has narrowed from 3 million to 1.8 million,” he said. He added that IT-based postal ballots will be introduced for expatriates, and steps are being taken to include nearly one million individuals involved in election duties in the voting process.
“We want an election truly clear and reflective, like a mirror. For that, we seek your support,” he said, adding that commissioners and the secretary have been instructed to maintain regular briefings with the media.
