In an interim order addressing the leadership tussle within the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), the Election Commission of India (ECI) has frozen the party’s official name (“All India Trinamool Congress”) and its reserved symbol (“Flowers & Grass”) for the ongoing by-elections.
Equitable Interim Measures: To maintain a level playing field between the two rival factions—one led by Ms. Mamata Banerjee and the other by Shri Arup Roy—the Commission ruled that neither group can use the party’s primary name or symbol until a final determination is reached under Paragraph 15 of the Election Symbols Order.
New Names and Free Symbols Mandated: Both factions have been directed to submit three preferences each for a new group name (which may include a linkage to the parent party) and three choices from the list of free symbols for their candidates.
Strict Deadline: The rival camps must furnish their preferred names and free symbols options to the ECI by 11:00 AM on September 18, 2026.
