At least four people were killed and at least 12 had been shot after a gunman opened fire at a synagogue on Saturday morning, according to a report in New York Times quoting an official in Pittsburgh.

According to reports Erika Strassburger, the city councilwoman for the district that includes the synagogue, the Tree of Life Congregation, said the gunman had surrendered to the police after being barricaded in the building and had been taken to the hospital.

Three police officers were shot but their injuries were not life- threatening, she said.

Officials did not immediately confirm a motive for the attack at the synagogue, where dozens of people were understood to be celebrating Shabbat services on the Jewish sabbath, and which comes with the United States witnessing a sharp spike in anti-Semitic incidents.

US television networks reported that at least four people had died, while the local CBS affiliate reported that eight people were dead.

Jeff Finkelstein, the president and chief executive of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, told CNN: “My heart goes out to all these families. This should not be happening, period. It should not be happening in a synagogue, it should not be happening in our neighborhood in Squirrel Hill.”

President Trump said on Twitter that “events in Pittsburgh are far more devastating than originally thought.”
