Superstar Shah Rukh Khan today conferred with honorary doctorate by the Maulana Azad National Urdu University MANNU at its VI th convocation at campus here.

Along with Shah Rukh Khan, Urdu aficionado and founder of Rekhta Foundation Sanjiv Saraf has been given ‘honorius causa’ for their contribution in the promotion of Urdu language and culture.

Sanjiv is a voracious reader; passionate about Urdu poetry and has recently learnt the language. He is a lover of art and music.

Through his Rekhta Foundation Saraf has established a free website Rekhta.org with the objective of promoting and disseminating Urdu literature, especially Urdu Poetry to an audience beyond those conversant with the Urdu script.

President of India Parnab Mukherjee was  to be chief guest. But he could not attend the programme due to some unavoidable reasons.

 Zafar Yunus Sareshwala, the Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) gave away the degrees.

Addressing the convocation, the Badshah of Bollywood said this honour will make his (late) father happy as he was a freedom fighter and held Maulana Azad and also education in high esteem.

“Not sure if I deserve it but am extremely happy that you have bestowed this honour upon me. My parents would have been happier if they were alive,” he noted.

The Shah Rukh Khan said he will make all effort to live up to the responsibility bestowed on him.

About 2,885 graduates and postgraduates and 276 M.Phil and PhD scholars from various disciplines in regular courses have been awarded the degrees. Besides, 44,235 graduates and post graduates under the distance mode of learning given degrees in absentia,

Maulana Azad National Urdu University is a Central University located in Hyderabad in state of Telangana.
