United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said that the number of displaced people around the world has never been so higher. Ban spoke after visiting a camp for internally displaced people yesterday in Africa’s Congo nation. He stressed upon the need for the international community to improve the way humanitarian support is provided.

Congo’s eastern part is home to multiple rebel groups. Ban said the UN would work with authorities, asking them not to close camps that are lacking resources.

Earlier yesterday in his visit to neighbouring Burundi, Ban said Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza has agreed to begin talks with opposition leaders to bring an end to a nearly year-long political crisis. The UN Chief said that all sides there had promised to engage in inclusive dialogue. Burundi has been mired in crisis since last April, when Nkurunziza sought and won what is widely seen as an unconstitutional third term.
