The United Nations has cleared a proposal allowing the Talibani envoy to meet the foreign minister of Pakistan and China in Islamabad. The request was made by Pakistan seeking travel exemption for the Taliban administration’s foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. The UN granted the permission on Monday. This is the first such decision by the UN linked to Muttaqi who has long been subjected to a travel ban, asset freeze, and arms embargo under Security Council sanctions.
According to the request proposal, Pakistan would cover all costs associated with Muttaqi’s trip. Chinese and Pakistani officials have said in the past that they would welcome Taliban-led Afghanistan into the controversial China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) infrastructure that passes through the Indian territory that has been illegally occupied by Pakistan. India has been firmly opposed to projects in the so-called CPEC and has called such activities inherently illegal, illegitimate, and unacceptable.
