Decrying Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal of passing the controversial Triple Talaq Bill in Rajya Sabha, Muslim women today warned the government not interfere in the ‘personal matters’ of Muslims.
Muslim women from across India who gathered here ahead of Parliament session warned the BJP-led government not to attempt forcibly to pass the Bill in Rajya Sabha. Muslim women rejected the bill, describing it as a “direct interference” in the Muslim Personal Law and a “conspiracy to destroy the family life” in the Muslim societies. They also came down heavily on the ruling party BJP alleging it is “playing politics” with Muslim woman’s life.
“There is a continuous attempt to break family setup and social structure and disintegrate the homes and making women more vulnerable to exploitation, Muslim women are safe and protected under the Muslim personal law,” they said.
Under the banner of the Women’s Wing of All India Muslim Personal Board, member representatives of women organizations from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Behar, West Bengal, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh opposed the bill which is currently in the Upper House (Rajya Sabha) and they feared that the Modi government may get it passed by convening the Joint Session of the Parliament to overcome its lack of majority in the Upper House.
Condemning the ruling party for playing its politics on Muslim women, speakers asked why Modi government is not serious about the welfare of women belonging to other religions? The bill was introduced to appease the hard-core constituency of the ruling party, they added.
Dr. Asma Zehra, the chairperson of Women Wing, said the Triple Talaq Bill has been introduced without any consultation with the stakeholders and we reject it totally and demand that it is to be taken back.
It is a totally defective bill lacking legal coherence with other laws in IPC and also against the verdict of Supreme Court in the triple talaq case delivered on August 22, 2017, Dr. Zehra said.
The Bill puts the Muslim women in a more difficult situation than any relief, she insisted.
Some so-called women andolans are speaking in media who have no knowledge of Muslim Personal law or the ground situation in the Muslim community and we oppose any interference in the Personal law, she said.
She further claimed that 99 percent Muslim Women have full faith and respect towards leadership of All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
It is not the job of the government to interfere with the reform matters of any community instead the government should facilitate educational and economic upliftment of the community, Dr. Zehra said.
Another speaker, Mrs. Fatima Muzaffar alleged that the present government is interfering in the fundamental rights of minorities guaranteed in the constitution.
As any other religious group, Muslims should have right to religious freedom, she said.
It is our duty as a community to make people aware of their rights and protect the same and we should not allow the government to interfere in our personal matters, she warned.
Besides Dr. Zehra, Mrs. Amna Rizwan, member AIMPLB., Mrs. Mamduha Majid, member AIMPLB, Dr. Asefa Nisar Counsellar MWHL, Banglore, Mrs Tasneem Farzana , Bangalore, Karnataka, Mrs. Sumayya Nomani Member AIMPLB, Maharashtra, Mrs. Nabeela, Bhatkal, Karnataka, Mrs. Atiya Siddiqa, member AIMPLB, Mrs. Meher Unnisa, Jaipur, Rajasthan, Dr. Sofia member AIMPLB, Mrs, Khursheeda Begum, Deoband, Lucknow, Dr. Mehjabeen Naaz, Patna and others spoke against the bill.
