SUSHMA 3External Affair Minister Sushma Swaraj today said efforts are being made to rescue 200 Indian students, who have been trapped in Houston — one of the biggest cities in the US — which is witnessing devastating floods after Hurricane Harvey, one of the worst cyclones in decades. The 200 students are trapped at the campus of the University of Houston, an area under neck-deep water.

In a series of tweets, the Minister said she is in touch with the Consul General of India in Houston, Anupam Ray, who is in charge of the rescue operations and every effort is being made to rescue the students.

The Minister on her twitter handle wrote, “@CGHoust has informed me that 200 Indian students at University of Houston are marooned.
They are surrounded by neck deep water.

More than 30,000 people are going to need shelters as a result of the unrelenting rains and flooding of Tropical Storm Harvey overwhelming Texas, FEMA Administrator Brock Long said Monday, reports USA Today.

“The sheltering mission is going to be a very heavy lift,” Long said in a Washington news conference, adding that up to 50 Texas counties are dealing with the impact of the storm.

Louis Uccellini, director of the National Weather Service, said some areas of southeast Texas around Houston have already seen more than 30 inches of rain. A wide swath of the region has been with with 15-20 inches of rain, he said.
