The Government has said, the reconstitution of the governing board of Nalanda University is in compliance with the legal regime under which it was created.
MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup in reply to a media query clarified that Nalanda Mentor Group, NMG was an ad-hoc arrangement which was continuing for the last nine years.
He said, the NMG, formed in 2007 was meant to discharge the functions of the Governing Board, pending formation of a proper Governing Board according to the provisions of the Nalanda University Act. Mr Swarup said, India has great respects for Mr. George Yeo and his contributions to Nalanda University.
Mr. Yeo had resigned recently from the post of chancellor alleging that the autonomy of the university was being compromised. He was the former Foreign Minister of Singapore.
