Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held talks with Presidents of Russia and China in Ufa ahead of the BRICS and SCO summits to be held tomorrow. During their talks, Mr Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin, resolved to take strategic bilateral ties forward and discussed India’s accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, SCO. Mr Putin said, he was looking forward to developing the cooperation between the two countries.

Modi thanked the Russian President for the welcome he got on his arrival earlier in the day. He also thanked Mr Putin with regard to India getting the membership of SCO with the process set to be completed by next year. Mr Modi mentioned that the Russian President himself called him to inform about the decision of the six-nation grouping.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, just over a month after they met in China. In his second bilateral meeting after arriving in Ufa, Mr Modi held delegation-level talks with the Chinese President whom he had met in Xi’an during his China visit in May. In a tweet, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup said, the fifth meeting in a year shows the depth of the India-China relationship

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Russian city of Ufa today to participate in the seventh summit meeting of BRICS countries comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. He was received at the airport by the Mayor of Ufa city.

With the theme of ‘BRICS partnership- a powerful factor for global development’, the stage is set for summit. The agenda for this summit covers both political and economic issues but the emphasis will remain on the economic cooperation.

The BRICS leaders are likely to discuss the future strategy to promote cooperation in the field of trade and finance among the member countries. The summit will discuss ways for greater integration of markets and investment within the member countries. Infrastructure development, energy security and evolving a democratic and equitable model of global economic governance are likely to be discussed during the Summit.

Focus will also be on operationalisation of the BRICS bank with an initial authorized capital of 100 billion dollar. The meeting of the leaders of world’s five prominent economies in Ufa is being keenly watched the world over.
