The Communist Party of India (CPI) has come down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent address to the nation following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, calling it “gravely inadequate” and lacking in transparency. In a statement released by its National Secretariat, the CPI expressed solidarity with the families of the 26 victims of the Pahalgam attack, affirming the unity of the Indian people in the fight against terrorism.

However, the CPI took strong exception to the Prime Minister’s speech, describing it as rich in rhetoric but poor in substance. The party noted that while Modi vowed to resist nuclear blackmail and terrorism, he failed to present a credible roadmap for long-term peace or to address the broader geopolitical context.

Crucially, the CPI questioned the Prime Minister’s silence on the role reportedly played by U.S. President Donald Trump in brokering the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Trump’s early announcement of the ceasefire and subsequent claims of mediating peace, as well as boosting trade with both nations, have, according to the CPI, undermined India’s strategic autonomy and violated the spirit of the Simla Agreement.

The CPI also condemned the omission of Indian casualties resulting from Pakistani retaliation and raised concerns over a lack of accountability in foreign policy. It demanded that the government clarify the nature of U.S. involvement, details of any backchannel diplomacy, and the terms of proposed trade arrangements.

Calling the Prime Minister’s televised address insufficient, the CPI reiterated its demand for an urgent special session of Parliament to ensure full democratic scrutiny of national security and foreign policy decisions. “The Prime Minister is accountable to the people through Parliament,” the statement concluded, “not through one-sided monologues.”
