Private TV channels in Pakistan, went off air today in protest against a government order banning coverage of an incident in Islamabad’s Faizabad. Additionally, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram have been blocked in some parts of the country.
There are reports that the government is mulling temporarily suspending mobile phone signals. The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority issued a notification in the Saturday prohibiting live coverage of the operation to end the Faizabad sit-in.
Thousands of religious protesters took over the streets in the federal capital Islamabad’s Faizabad Interchange. The protesters are camping out at the Faizabad Interchange since the 8th of this month.
They are asking for resignation of the law minister for adding amendment to the clause pertaining to the finality of prophet-hood oath for electoral candidates. The amendment has since been withdrawn.
Meanwhile, Law Minister Zahid Hamid’s residence in Sialkot was attacked by supporters of Tehreek-i-Labaik and other religious parties.
DawnNews reported that the attackers vandalised and pelted stones at Hamid’s house. The police have arrested more than a dozen protesters that were allegedly involved in the attack from the scene.
