The National People’s Party (NPP) president Conrad K Sangma has called on Meghalaya Governor Phagu Chauhan and staked a claim to form the government in the state. Mr Sangma claimed that he has an absolute majority, with more than 30 legislators on his side in the 60-member assembly, but refused to give details of other supporting parties. He said BJP and other parties have already extended their support to the NPP for the formation of the government. Mr Sangma also submitted his resignation as the Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, legislators from different parties including the United Democratic Party (UDP), People’s Democratic Front (PDF), Congress and the Voice of The People Party (VPP) held a meeting over the post-counting situation in Laitumkhrah. TMC leader Mukul Sangma and some members of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) were also present. Mr Mukul Sangma appealed to all non-NPP and non-BJP MLAs to unite to bring an end to the current regime.
Meanwhile, the State’s Chief Electoral Officer, F R Kharkongor and Election Commission of India Secretary called on Meghalaya Governor and formally handed over the ECI notification for the Constitution of New Legislative Assembly and list of the members Elected for Assembly Constituencies, along with their party affiliation.
