After the Calcutta High Court had directed the CBI to conduct a preliminary enquiry into the 2016 Narad sting operation case, and submit a report within 72 hours, West bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee says the sting was politically motivated, and she will appeal against the order in the Supreme court. In a sting by Narad News several Trinamool leaders were seen taking bribes. The court pulled up the state police for its inaction, saying that they were mere puppets of the state Govt and ordered a CBI inquiry without delay.
West Bengal government under the scanner once again…Calcutta High Court has directed the CBI to conduct a preliminary enquiry into the Narada sting operation case in which several Trinamool leaders were seen taking bribes. The court has asked the investigating agency to complete the preliminary investigation and submit a report in 72 hours. The sting surfaced just before the 2016 Assembly polls in the state. Calcutta High Court directed CBI to take possession of all material and devices related to the sting operation within 24 hours and to register an FIR, if required, after completion of the preliminary inquiry and initiate formal investigation thereafter. It also directed the state government to initiate disciplinary action against IPS officer Mirza, who was allegedly seen in one of the tapes.
Three petitions were filed in Calcutta High Court seeking an independent probe into the matter after the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in Chandigarh, said that the tapes were untampered. The Court maintained that given the persons against whom allegations have been made are ministers, MPs and other senior leaders from the state, it would be just to direct the CBI, and not a state agency, to conduct a preliminary inquiry. The Opposition hit out at the Mamata government after the court’s order.
Meanwhile, CM Mamata Bannerjee has said her govt will challenge the order in Supreme Court.
According to media reports 6 TMC Lok Sabha MPs, three top state ministers and the mayor of Kolkata were allegedly seen taking money on behalf of the party in the sting conducted by Narada News, an investigative news website.
