Ladakh UT administration has banned the use of plastic made bottles and other items in government offices and other institutions in Ladakh.

The decision was to preserve Ladakh’s fragile ecology and environment from the plastics.

UT Ladakh Finance General Administration department Commissioner Secretary Rigzin Samphel has issued an order to ban the use of plastic water bottles and other plastic made objects from today.

The Commissioner Secretary also ordered all the government run institutions to make alternate arrangements for safe drinking water that does not generate plastic waste.

In the order, he exhorted to take Initiatives and steps to ensure total ban on the use of plastic bottles, plastic folders and similar plastic made objects by the end of July 2020 in all government offices.

Alternative eco-friendly measures are implemented and substitutes made of biodegradable materials be used for all purposes.

However, multi-use water bottles, dispensers and containers are allowed in government offices.

The Order also suggested to use alternative materials like Glass, Steel, Aluminum for plastic.

Educational institutions have also advised to make efforts in propagating the message of zero littering of plastic bottles, effective plastic waste management and behavioral change towards dispensing with the use of plastic made products in the student community.

The Commissioner Secretary also directed DDOs and Treasury officers shall not entertain process bills that reflect expenditure on the use of aforesaid plastic made articles in government offices.
