Talking to media here, AICC senior spokesperson Ajay Maken, when asked about efforts by the party Vice- President to bring about a unity among opposition parties as displayed in Chennai at the birthday celebrations of the senior most Opposition Leader M Karunanidhi, said,’I think, it is good step because all the opposition parties should be together on issues that face the nation.

So, this was an issue-based unity which opposition parties displayed in Chennai at the birthday celebrations of the senior most opposition leader and it is healthy for democracy. ‘ On the criticism by the BJP , Mr Maken said, ‘When it was in opposition the BJP also used to forge unity amongst the opposition parties against the Congress party.

There cannot be two different sets of rules — one for you when you are in opposition and the other for opposition parties when you are in power.’ In recent months, the Congress has been making efforts to bring the various opposition parties together in an effort to form a joint opposition front for the presidential elections. Congress President Sonia Gandhi has been meeting leaders of various opposition parties to arrive at a joint candidate of the non-BJP opposition parties who could give a tough fight to the NDA nominee for the presidential elections, scheduled in July this year
