Noted Islamic scholar, author and one of the leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Maulana Muhammad Yusuf Islahi passed away at a hospital in Noida on Tuesday December 21, 2021, after a brief illness. He was 89.

He authored and published more than 60 books on various aspects of Islam. Among them, Aadab e Zindagi (Etiquettes of Life in Islam), Asan Fiqh (Everyday Fiqh), Quraani Taleemat, Sura-e-Yaseen, Sura-e-Saff, Tafhimul Hadith, Guldasta-e-Hadith, Islami Muashrah, Husne Muashrat, Dai -e-Azam, Roshan Sitare are his most-read works.Many of his books are translated and published in English, Hindi and other languages.

He became a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind at the age of 25 years and has been entrusted with various key posts. He was a member of Markazi Majlis Shura (Central Advisory Committee) for the last five terms. He was also guiding many educational and welfare institutions. He was the Nazim (President) of Jamea Tus Salehat, Rampur, a unique and very well known institution for higher Arabic and Islamic education for girls. Markazi Darsgahe Islami, Rampur was also running under his guidance for the last few years.

Born on 9th July 1932 at Formalee, District-Atak, Maulana Yusuf Islahi received his primary education in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. He was educated in Islamic Studies from Mazahir Uloom, Saharanpur and higher studies and Fazeelat from Madrasatul Islah, Sarai Mir. He memorized the Quran and also learnt Tajweed.

He spent four years under the guidance of Maulana Akhtar Ahsan Islahi and received Sanad Fazilat with distinction. He has been editing the popular magazine “Zikra Jadeed” for nearly four decades.

He was also the chief patron of Project WhyIslam of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) and used to spends a few months every year in the United States of America for the cause of Da’wah.

A great loss for the Muslim Ummah: Jamat chief

Expressing deep sorrow over Maulana Islahi’s demise JIH president Syed Sadatulla Husaini said that Jamaat lost the second elderly and experienced person, after the death of former Kerala JIH chief T K Abdullah, in the last two months. His death is a great loss for the JIH and the Muslim community.

The most significant achievement of Maulana Islahi, Mr. Husaini said, was his popular Islamic books that influenced several generations. His most famous book ‘Etiquette of Life in Islam (Adaab-e-Zindagi), can be found in the bookshelves of millions of Muslims worldwide. This book is also gifted to brides and bridegrooms on the occasion of marriages to learn how to live their married life as per the principles of Islam.

The top quality of his books, the JIH chief said, is that these are written in a straightforward language and are equally popular among women, children, and the elderly.

Mr. Husaini said that another achievement of Maulana Islahi was that he worked for the propagation of Islam in the US, Australia, Japan, and the European countries. For the last few decades, he spent almost half of every year in these countries delivering lectures on various aspects of Islam.
