India and Myanmar are engaged in discussions to resolve unresolved sections of their shared international boundary, with a possible territorial exchange proposal in Manipur reportedly under consideration, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that talks are underway between the two countries to address stretches of the India-Myanmar border that remain undemarcated. However, he did not confirm whether a formal land-swap proposal was part of the discussions.
“There are certain areas on the border which are yet to be settled. Discussions on those sectors are ongoing”, Jaiswal said, while responding to queries regarding reports of a possible exchange of territory between India and Myanmar.
The India-Myanmar boundary stretches for nearly 1,643 kilometres and passes through the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Several sections of the border have historically faced challenges related to difficult terrain, local settlements and pending demarcation issues.
Officials have maintained that any decision regarding boundary adjustments would be taken through established diplomatic channels and in consultation with relevant stakeholders.
The discussions come amid continued efforts by both countries to strengthen border management, improve coordination and address issues affecting communities living along the international boundary.
