The suspect wanted in connection with Saturday’s van-ramming incident during Berlin Pride was shot dead by police on Sunday after allegedly charging at officers with a bladed weapon, Deutsche Welle (DW) reported, citing Berlin authorities.
Berlin’s Senate Department for Interior Affairs, which serves as the city-state’s interior ministry, confirmed the suspect’s death following the police operation.
According to Berlin police, officers tracked the fugitive to a garden allotment in the Spandau district on the western outskirts of the German capital at around 6 p.m. local time (1600 UTC). Police said the suspect advanced towards officers while armed with a stabbing weapon, prompting them to open fire.
Firefighters attempted to resuscitate the man, but he succumbed to his injuries at the scene, police said. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, according to DW.
