Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will always be remembered for his multifaceted services to the country. He rose above discrimination and took decisions in the interest of all sections.
Jain leader Shramana Dr. Pushpendra said that Dr. Singh’s leadership and sensitivity played an important role in the upliftment of minority communities in the country. During his tenure as Prime Minister, Jain community was given the status of minority on 27 January 2014, which was an important step for the identity, rights and development of the Jain community.
This decision reflects his equal approach towards all communities and commitment to social justice. This historic initiative of his towards the Jain community will always be remembered. Dr. Manmohan Singh, a renowned economist who humbly served in many higher positions including the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, will also be known for his authenticity.
The Jain community honored him with the prestigious Anuvrat Award (2021) for his contribution to the upliftment of moral and human values.
Litterateur Dr. Dilip Dhing recalled the pithy and effective statement of Dr. Manmohan Singh which he had given while being the Prime Minister on 27 May, 2006 at Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi on the occasion of the release of Jain Manuscript Catalogue prepared by Jain Vidya Sansthan. Dr. Manmohan Singh had said that scientific thinking could develop in the country on the basis of the logical principles of Jainism.
Jain ideology gave India the strength to fight against orthodoxies and superstitions. Jain ideology helped in getting rid of social, religious and economic problems. Jainism is an integral part of Indian intellectualism, through which India could achieve great glory in the past as well. Its approach towards non-violence has developed a style that establishes harmony between life and nature. In today’s materialistic era, the spiritual heritage of Jainism is more relevant.
