GUWAHATI/ NEW DELHI (AMN): Amid the controversy over  alleged phone call between senior congress leader Digvijay Singh and slain ATS chief Hemant Karkare, the former has reiterated his stand on the remarks.

“ I am absolutely firm that I did make call to Hemant Karkare two our before he was killed on 26/11” Digvijay told media persons in Guwahati.

Singh countered the reported Mumbai police claims that Karkare’s phone records showed no evidence of any such call. He said he had asked Minister of state for  telecom Sachin Pilot for call records that would prove his statement.

Later speaking to a TV channel Singh said that the call records sealed under the Telegraph Act he could not access Karkare’s records. “What he can do is access his own phone records and prove that he had spoken to Karkare”, he said.

Call records of all police officers were forwarded to the Pradhan Committee which was appointed to look into the police response in the hours after the siege of Mumbai began.

Digvijay had subsequently clarified that he never doubted the role of Pakistani elements in the Mumbai attacks.

Singh also maintained that the BJP lent its support to Hindu terror groups.

"I want to ask (L K) Advaniji and Rajnathji why they went to meet the PM after Sadhvi Pragya was arrested after the Malegaon blast. Why did Rajnathji go to the jail to meet her? BJP has to answer these questions before they ask some to Prime Minister." Digvijay had asked.

Following his remarks, the BJP demanded that Congress to force Singh to resign from the party for his remarks that feared for his safety from Hindu extremists in the wake of the Malegaon blast probe.

Meanwhile Indian Express quoting sources on Tuesday reports that Karkare indeed had threat perception at that time and the former ATS chief was disturbed over allegations against his family after the Malegaon probe was made public.

However sources told the paper that “Karkare was not scared” and that “he was very practical and took adequate measures to ensure his family was safe”.
Karkare had raised the wall around his house just a week before his death and also brought home a dog.

He was not scared for his life nor was he the kind to be afraid of consequences of an honest probe. In RAW, you are trained to handle threats. “ It was the allegations against his family that disturbed him and he took practical measures to ensure their safety,” reports the paper.
