Thousands of Cubans gathered at Revolution Square in the capital Havana, for a rally to say final goodbye to their revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.
Castro, who came to power in 1959 and ushered in a Communist revolution, died on Friday, aged 90.
Left-wing Latin American leaders are attending the event but other countries have sent lower-ranking emissaries.
Opinion on Fidel Castro, who ruled Cuba as a one-party state for almost half a century, remains divided. Some in tears or wrapped in the Cuban flag, mourners paid tributes to their beloved leader.
The crowd chanted “long live the revolution!” and “Fidel! Fidel!” as the rally got under way.
Meanwhile, US has decided not to send an official delegation to Cuba for the memorial service.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh who is in Havana to pay tributes to the departed leader with a political delegation, said India considers Castro an an iconic figure of 20th century.
