2-day All India Presiding Officers’ Conference to be held at Statue of unity at Kevadia in Gujarat from tomorrow

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has said that on 71st Constitution Day, Presiding Officers shall take a pledge to make legislatures more accountable, thereby strengthening and empowering them according to constitutional values.

It will be done at a two-day All India Presiding Officers’ Conference to be held at the Statue of Unity at Kevadia in Gujarat begin tomorrow.

Speaking to media Speaker informed that all delegates at the Conference will also recite the Preamble to the Constitution of India under the leadership of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

Observing that our Constitution reinforces our democracy and thereby strengthens people’s faith in parliamentary democracy, Mr Birla said that Legislatures are the supreme fora to raise the issues that affect the masses. As such, representatives of the people hold an onerous responsibility to ventilate their feelings on the floors of their respective Houses.

Birla stressed that discussions in Legislatures mirror the aspirations of the people, which necessitates that the conduct of the proceedings remains smooth and without interruptions.

Mr Om Birla said that the theme of this year conference is Harmonious Coordination of Legislative, Executive and Judiciary – Key to a Vibrant Democracy.

Om Birla said that President Ram Nath Kovind will inaugurate the two day conference.

He said that vice president and Deputy Chairman of Rajya sabha Mr. M. Venkaiah Naidu will also remain present on this occasion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the valedictory session of the conference on 26th to mark the celebration of the constitution day.

He said that it is our collective efforts to maintain the constitutional sanctity which is very important for mutual co-existence between the three organs of governance and the sustenance of democracy in the country.

Om Birla said, various sessions will be organised in which presiding officers will exchange their views and shared the best practices.

He said that discussions will also be held on ways to make the proceedings of Parliament and Legislative Assemblies more productive.

Referring to the theme for this year’s Conference viz. “Harmonious Coordination between Legislature, Executive and Judiciary- Key to a Vibrant Democracy”, Birla said that the Presiding Officers of the Legislatures shall discuss the need for better cooperation and coordination between the three pillars of democracy in order to strengthen India democracy and to make it more effective.
