All borders of the Union Territory of Chandigarh have been sealed, and a police force has been deployed in the wake of the march of protesting farmers. Chandigarh Superintendent of Police Geetanjali Khandelwal has said that policemen deployed on the barricades at all the borders of Chandigarh are vigilant.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Jaswinder Singh of Chandigarh said that no untoward incident has been reported so far.
Despite heavy police presence and roadblocks, farmers in Punjab have begun their march towards Chandigarh in small groups, aiming for a week-long sit-in. Police have stopped their progress at checkpoints and sealed the city border, while also detaining several farmer leaders, including those from the BKU Rajewal faction.
BKU Dakaunda, the second-largest farmer union in Punjab, has alleged that police roughed up their president Manjit Singh Dhaner. When police tried to arrest Dhaner near Bhaini Dharera village, Raikot, a number of farmers gathered and did not let them take away Dhaner. The farmer leader managed to slip away as police and farmers came to a near confrontation, said Angrej Singh,his associate.
