The mastermind of last month’s attack at a cafe in Dhaka has been killed by security forces. A joint team of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit and police had stormed a hideout in the outskirts of Dhaka today and killed Tamim Ahmed Choudhury along with 2 other militants.
The militants had opened fire as the team entered the house, but were overpowered.
Security forces said, Tamim was the leader of new branch of the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh.
20 hostages, including 17 foreigners and two police officers, were killed in the cafe attack on the 1st of last month.
Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque told reporters that the militants hurled a grenade and exchanged heavy gunfire with the police.
They have burnt some material believed to be important documents about their activities. Tamin Choudhury who left Canada since 2013 is not only the mastermind of the Gulshan and Shaolakia attacks, but also mentored the the group of 9 militants killed in Kalyanpur on July 26th.
Sources say he had an alleged IS link and headed a branch of the banned JMB. Today’s operation named Hit Strong 27 is a strong boost of confidence against the militants for the police forces in Bangladesh.
