Police in Bangladesh, today detained several hundred across the country in a crackdown against militants in the wake of an intensifying wave of violent killings.
The detainees included activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its Students’ Wing Islami Chhatra Sibir, fugitives, local drug dealers, suspected criminals and drug addicts.
The 7-day crackdown stated this morning following a week of violent killings, the victims among whom included the wife of a crime-buster senior police officer and members of minority communities.
As part of the crackdown, check-posts and search points have been increased at key points in the capital.
Opposition BNP leaders have however questioned the motive of the crack-down saying the government is trying to repress the opposition. Leaders of ruling Awami League have been blaming the opposition for alleged links to the violent killings.
